PLANNING GUIDE / MATERIAL + SURFACE

Before choosing the pattern, look at the wall.

Wallpaper decisions become easier when product, surface and room details are considered together. Use this guide to frame the questions—not to replace product instructions or a conversation about your specific wall.

A WALLPAPER PLAN HAS THREE PARTS

The material. The surface. The layout.

A print may be beautiful on a sample and still need thoughtful planning at full scale. Start by identifying the wallcovering and checking the condition of the wall. Then consider where the pattern should begin and how it will carry through the room.

01

MATERIAL

Traditional paper, vinyl and specialty finishes

Wallcoverings vary in weight, backing, finish and installation instructions. Vinyl, paper-backed, fabric-backed, grasscloth and other specialty surfaces may call for different adhesives or handling. The manufacturer’s instructions are the first reference for the selected product; the installation plan should account for that product and the wall beneath it.

For a patterned paper, the repeat tells you how the design aligns from strip to strip. A large repeat can affect how much material is needed and where a focal motif lands. Keep the label or product page available if you have it, but you can ask questions before selecting a final option.

PEEL-AND-STICK

“Removable” does not mean every wall is the same.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper can be useful for certain projects, but it still depends on the surface and the product directions. Dust, texture, flaking paint and uneven patches can interfere with contact. A clean, smooth and stable surface gives the material a more suitable starting point; the exact requirements vary by brand.

Ask about the product before assuming it can be installed over an existing finish. The wall’s condition and the manufacturer’s guidance should inform the conversation.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Small imperfections can show through.

Before installation, a wall should be assessed for loose paint, old adhesive, texture, cracks, moisture concerns and uneven areas. What preparation is appropriate depends on the substrate and wallcovering. Removal may reveal repairs or residue that were not visible beforehand.

Do not assume a new wallcovering will hide a rough surface. If you know the wall has an old layer, a recent repair or a textured finish, mention it when you call.

PATTERN + FINISHING

Alignment is a room-level decision.

Panel placement can affect whether a central motif feels balanced, where seams fall and how the design meets a corner, doorway, window or outlet. A layout is planned around the room and the product, rather than starting at an arbitrary point and hoping the repeat resolves itself.

Accent walls, murals and large-scale prints deserve particular attention to their focal point and panel order. With seams and corners, the goal is a clean, coherent finish that suits the wallpaper and the wall.

Helpful context for an estimate

  • Which city the project is in
  • The room or wall you have in mind
  • Whether old wallpaper needs removal
  • The wallpaper type, if you know it
  • Any visible surface concerns

This information is optional. A call is welcome even if you are still deciding.

ONE LAST PRACTICAL NOTE

Not sure whether the wall is ready?

Call to describe what you see and ask about next steps. You may ask whether an on-site assessment or measurements can be arranged; availability is confirmed for each request.
